ALAH Weekend Update

Hello Knight Family:

We are so thankful for the cooler weather!  The beginning of this week was absolutely brutal and now we are almost cold!  It is really a perk of living in central IL, the weather changes often and quickly.

Next week is a busy week for the Knights.  We will be hosting Jessica Hageman our representative from Jostens.  She will be offering products such as class rings, graduation invitations, letterman jackets and our graduation robes.  Jessica will be meeting with seniors and sophomores on Monday.

On Tuesday, we will be having our active intruder drill.  You should have received information earlier this week with general information about the drill and earlier today with more specific information about the drill.  Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

On Wednesday all students and community members are invited to attend a poster making party for Homecoming!  The cheerleaders are organizing the event that will start at 6PM in the east gym of the high school.  Bring your school spirit ideas, and poster making supplies if you have them.  If you don't have supplies, there will be plenty at the school.  We are hoping to have a great turnout!

Have you ever wondered where our concession stand monies go?  Concession stand money is put towards our annual Senior Trip to Washington, D.C.  This year our senior class will be leaving for five days to Washington DC for the 68th time in our school history.  Students begin earning money to pay for this trip in junior high.  One of the ways students earn money towards this trip is to work our concession stands at our events.  Sign ups are in the office and your student receives regular emails inviting them to work.  Seniors are given first preference. We are noticing that more students want to cheer on their peers and not work at the concession stand which is understandable.  We have a new idea – if you are a parent/guardian and would be willing to work for your student, let us know!  We will start with parents/guardians of our seniors and go from there. Email Eilis Martinez at martineze@cusd305.org or myself at seegmillers@cusd305.org and let us know if you are interested in working with us while earning money for your student’s senior trip.

The excitement for Homecoming is building.  Class meetings were held this week and I even heard preparations for winning the class cheer competition!  A few informational items for you to keep in mind.

  • The Homecoming Dance is October 8th. Students who would like to bring a guest to the dance (a guest that is not a current ALAH student) MUST complete a Guest Request Form and return it to the office by Tuesday, October 4th.  These forms are in the office and requirements may be reviewed in the student handbook on page 32, but include that guests must be at least in ninth grade but no older than 20 years of age.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

  • Is your student still in need of a dress for our big event?  Beginning next week we will have dresses and a few men’s items hanging on the stage in the east gym.  Students may shop and try on during their flex period, study hall, or before and after school.  They just need to let their teacher know.  If they find something they would like to wear there is no cost for the clothing.

  • Our Homecoming parade is Friday, October 7 at 3:00.  Our faculty and staff are required to attend meetings in Charleston for the Regional Office of Education that day so there is no school.  This does make things awkward for us in organizing however we want every student to have the opportunity to participate in and/or watch the parade, just like in previous years.  Therefore, we will be sending a survey out to all students on Monday asking if they need transportation to the high school for the parade.  This is just to the school and not returning home.  We hope this helps all of our students that want to be here.

Parents & guardians of Seniors don’t forget about our parent meeting on Thursday, September 29th @ 5:30 in the cafeteria. From 5:30 - 6:00 we will be talking about all things seniors and then from 6:00 - 6:30 will be college information.  Mrs. Hart is hosting a college application workshop for seniors during their Flex period on Friday, September 30th.  We also have five colleges planning to visit our campus to meet with students.  Students will receive information in their email with specific information.

  • Monday, Sep. 26 - EIU
  • Thursday, Sep. 29 - Parkland College
  • Wednesday, Oct. 19 - Lake Land College
  • Thursday, Oct. 20 - University of Illinois
  • Thursday, Nov. 19 - Millikin

Our fall sports season is hitting those big moments.  Conference tournaments and championships, senior nights, regionals and more.  With these comes excitement and extra tension both from our student athletes, coaches and sometimes even parents.  I recently read this article, Parenting an Athlete by PJ Caposey talking about what student athletes need from parents.  It’s a great read and good food for thought.

Hope to see you at one of our many activities this week.  Enjoy the weekend.
