One Good Fact: Major League Baseball club owner Bill Veeck was known as the “Barnum of Baseball.” In 1951 he hired three-foot-seven Eddie Gaedel to be a pinch hitter. Wearing the number 1/8, Gaedel had a strike zone so small that he walked on four straight balls, then was replaced with a pinch runner. MLB officials did not appreciate the tactic and quickly voided his contract, ending Gaedel’s career with a perfect 1.000 on-base percentage.
