Hello Knight Family:
Earlier today I received an email that was sent to all local schools about new illegal devices that make e-cigarettes not only more appealing to youth, but are also in everyday devices. Think milk cartons, drink bottles, slushie cups, toys, etc. “As we continue into the school year, it’s critical that parents, teachers, and other adults are aware of illegal e-cigarettes deceptively packaged to look like everyday items,” said Brian King, Ph.D., M.P.H., director of FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products. “These types of products can be easily concealed and contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can harm the developing adolescent brain.” I am including a couple of examples, but would encourage you to check out the entire article. There is research that shows a correlation between students who are using e-cigarettes or vaping and their attendance at school. This is because the primary risk factor for truancy is related to substance abuse. Substance abuse includes the use of nicotine. Why do we care about truancy? Truancy is linked to academic difficulties and involvement in the juvenile justice system. This is all particularly worrisome when vaping is so popular with teenagers and is so easily disguised in items that look like pens, milk cartons and drink containers. The saying goes that it isn’t easy to be a teenager, but it really isn’t easy to be a parent either.
On a positive and much lighter note, yesterday our kitchen crew, Dayna Arnett, Brittany Bates and Chris Ellis, made us a full Thanksgiving Dinner! It was absolutely delicious and included turkey and all the sides plus cinnamon apples and a pumpkin dessert. They set us up for next week. A huge shout out and thank you to our kitchen crew for going above and beyond. Remember we only have school on Monday and Tuesday next week before we break away for the Thanksgiving Holiday.
