Hello Knight Family:

On Friday, November 10th we will be honoring veterans with a luncheon prepared by our Family Consumer Science students and a community wide Veterans Day assembly that will include our military service club, FFA, band, chorus and guest speaker, Gunnery Sergeant James Cazel.  Arthur Grade School will be joining us for the 1:15 assembly and activities.  If you have a family member that served or is serving, we invite you to complete this form – we want to include their name on our wall of honor.  Everyone is invited to our assembly at 1:15 and if you would like to join us for the luncheon, please RSVP to the high school office at 217-543-2146 as soon as possible.

Are you looking for a way to be more involved in our school community?  I have two great opportunities for you to consider.  First, we have a district mentoring program that pairs you with a student to mentor. Mentors typically work one-on-one with a student.  Mentors are utilized in all of our buildings, not just the high school.  Their major task is to motivate the student to stay focused and stay in school. Through this process of setting short-term goals and serving as a role model, volunteers provide encouragement and friendship to a student needing to build his/her self-esteem.  If you are interested, please contact the high school office at 217-543-2146 for more information!

Another great opportunity to get involved is to serve on the Parent Advisory Council for the high school. This committee will meet monthly beginning in November and go through April.  We will  cover everything from the handbook to how we can make the high school experience better.  If you are interested, please email me at seegmillers@cusd305.org before Friday, November 10th.

I attended Dr. Steve Webb’s presentation on Thursday night at the high school and the information he shared about keeping our children safe on the internet was alarming.  Please know that I am not an expert on any of this, but feel it is important that we are all talking about it. Dr. Webb’s top 10 apps that we should be concerned about on our children’s phones include:

  • Instagram/NGL

  • Snapchat/YOLO LMN

  • Whisper

  • Yik Yak

  • Kik

  • TikTok

  • Tinder

  • Tor

  • BeReal

  • MeetMe

  • Discord

Dr. Webb said that this list is ever changing and updated frequently. He also spoke about some phones having ‘vault’ apps that hide photos, videos and other apps. You can find these in your app purchases list under settings. There are even ‘calculators’ where you type in a code that looks like a math problem and then it connects you to hidden information.  If you would like more information check out Dr. Webb’s website or his book, Education in a Violent World, A Practical Guide to Keeping our Kids Safe. This is just a reminder to all of us that we must be active in what is happening on those phones!  And phones are privileges not rights. Using these apps may have a negative effect on your student and their mental health.
