ALAH Weekend Update

Hello Knight Family:

On Monday we will observe September 11th with lessons and video presentations developed by our Social Science Department during flex period. It is hard to believe that it was 22 years ago.  Although our high school students weren’t even born yet they have lived in a world that has drastically changed because of the events.  We hope our activities will provide information along with a time for questions and reflections.

Today we kicked off an all school fundraiser, selling discount cards that are for over 20 local businesses.  The cards cost $20 and our students earn $10 per card.  These monies will go towards your student’s senior trip.  ALAH has a 70 year tradition of taking seniors to Washington, D.C.  Students begin earning money to pay for this trip in junior high and have opportunities throughout high school, so they are able to attend with no extra costs.  Students need to earn $700 for their senior trip.  For the first two weeks there are prizes and incentives for selling the cards!  We are excited about being able to have this fundraiser opportunity for every student.

Has your student joined a club at the high school?  We have multiple opportunities popping up and really something for everyone.  Our Art Club meets for the first time after school until 4:30 on Tuesday 9/12 in the Art Room.  You do not have to be in art class to be in art club to join.  We have a game club (think board games and card games) that meets on Wednesdays  in the library until 4:30 p.m.  Our Military Service Club is meeting for the first time on Wednesday during 8th hour and there is a sign up for our Science Club that was emailed to your student.  Educational research tells us that students who are engaged in a club or extracurricular activity have higher grades, better attendance records and just enjoy school more!  Tell your student to listen and read their announcements for information about current and new clubs.

There has been a lot in the news recently about vaping. But did you know that there is also a correlation between vaping and truancy?  According to a study conducted by the CDC in 2020, approximately 20% of high school students and 5% of middle school students reported using e-cigarettes. The use of nicotine is the primary risk factor for truancy related to substance abuse. Truancy has been linked to academic difficulties and involvement in the juvenile justice system. This is particularly worrisome considering the rising prevalence and popularity of vaping among middle and high school students. The FDA believes that 2.5 million teenagers used e-cigarettes last year.  Please talk to your student about the dangers of vaping beginning with that vaping devices are illegal for anyone under 21 in the state of IL and the many harmful risks to their bodies.

We ran eligibility today, check your student’s grades on Skyward! Students who are passing all of their classes have open campus lunch and students with C’s or better may leave during study hall next week with parent permission.

That is one big weekly email!

Don’t forget we have an early dismissal on Thursday!
