Dear AHGS Families,
SMENCILS are back! We will have them for sale in the office starting Monday. They are $1.00 a piece. For the new students, smencils are scented pencils! We sell them throughout the year to raise money for our PBIS fund. The PBIS fund is used to purchase rewards, snacks, and help fund celebrations that we have with the students throughout the year.
WHAT IS PBIS??
PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Support. We use this program to promote positive behavior and work towards common goals within the buidling. Our expectations are centered around 3 main goals:
Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Ready to Learn.
Teachers have been working with their classroom to develop expectations within their room. Each quarter we have a building goal that we will work for and track progress. If our students reach that goal then we have a quarterly reward. Students are also working individually and earning "Knight Bucks." The younger students get to put their stars up on the Shining Knight Board. There are different prizes that they earn depending on the number of Knight Bucks they have. For example, when they earn 100 Knight Bucks they get a candy bar of their choice. It is a fun way to promote positive behavior. The older students get to collect their Knight Bucks and once a quarter they have the opportunity to spend their Knight Bucks in the Knight Buck Store. In this store we sell anything from candy, to smencils, to figets, to Knights gear. It is a fun way to get kids involved and making good choices.
If you would ever like to donate any prizes to PBIS it would be greatly appreciated! Here is a list of prizes that kids enjoy, just send them with your kiddo to the office and we will use them!
- Individualized snacks
- Fun pens, pencils, erasers
- soda
- bags of chips
- candy bars
- gift cards

Students should have brought home information regarding our AHGS Knights Reading Challenge. This is a new challenge for our building and our hope is that it encourages reading at home! Research shows that the more reading a child does the better they perform academically! We hope your child is excited to take part in this challenge. Students will set individual goals for reading throughout the year. They can achieve red, bronze, silver, and gold recognition. They will tie this goal with the AR (accelerated reading) program used in the classroom. Every time they read an AR book at their level, take the quiz, and pass it they will earn a point towards their goal! There will be awards to go with each level of reading they achieve and it will be displayed in the hallway! To make things a little more exciting we have also set a school-wide goal of reading 20,000 books for the year. Progress for individual and school wide goals will be displayed in the hallway! Currently we have read 634 books! Keep up the great reading!
Have a wonderful weekend!
